Hostels

Edinburgh has eleven hostels in this comparison, and the cheapest dorm bed anywhere in the city starts from £10 a night (see Edinburgh At Night). That price belongs to a Kick Ass Hostels property, one of two the group runs here. At the other end, a bed at the Scottish Youth Hostels Association starts from £21. Prices shown are low-season, midweek November guides for a dorm bed, and they climb steeply when the Fringe arrives.

Edinburgh Hostels By Price And Rating

The table ranks every hostel by price first, then by guest rating. Castle Rock Hostel leads on rating, scoring 9.42 across 25,769 reviews, with CODE Pod Hostels close behind at 9.36. Royal Mile Backpackers and the SYHA listing also score above 9. Remember each rating keeps its own platform scale, so a 9.42 on one site is not directly comparable with an 8 on another. Ratings shift as reviews accumulate.

How To Pick A Hostel Bed

Price is the obvious filter, but location matters just as much in a city this walkable. Hostels on or near the Royal Mile, such as Castle Rock, Royal Mile Backpackers and High Street Hostel, put most of the Old Town within a short walk. St Christopher's Inns and the a&o property sit slightly further out, which usually shows in the bed price. Decide whether you want to be beside the nightlife or a few stops from it.

Rating gaps tell you something too. The a&o and Argyle Backpackers listings sit in the mid-7s, while CODE Pod Hostels and Princes Street Hostel clear 8.5. Those differences often reflect noise, dorm size and the state of shared bathrooms rather than safety or staff. Larger chains such as a&o trade polish for scale, with 3,069 reviews behind their score. Smaller hostels, like Argyle with 2,637 reviews, can feel more sociable in the kitchen.

When To Book A Hostel

Hostel beds from £10 a night fill first once August approaches, because Fringe performers grab dorms early, and official Fringe Society advice confirms affordable options go first-come, first-served. Book January or February stays for the lowest rates of the year, well under the summer peak. For the Fringe itself, commit by spring. Outside the centre, Southside beds sit minutes from venues at gentler prices.
